Recovering from a traumatic brain injury

The accident was painful enough, but dealing with a traumatic brain injury afterward presents its own set of challenges. You may have to make many adjustments to your life as you learn more about the extent of your injury and the best treatment plan.

Among the reminders that it "could have been worse" is the reality that you still have a substantial injury for the rest of your life. Even if you can get some of your old functionality back, it will take months of work and practice to make it happen.

Here are some tips for getting the support you need as you recover from a traumatic brain injury.

Be clear about your boundaries

People like to help. Your friends and family, especially, may want to get involved and try to help you create a new normal for yourself. Although you may appreciate what everyone is doing, there may be times when you want to try to accomplish your own tasks or have the time to be alone.

Remember that your loved ones are not trying to coddle you; they want to help but maybe unsure about how to help. Be open about telling your friends and family what your boundaries are so that they know what to expect. Even if they do not understand your need for time on your own, they will be able to appreciate clear communication.

Don't be afraid to ask for more help

Traumatic brain injuries are complex, and everyone is different. Your injury can also change as time goes on.

Be open with your support system about the help you need. When your needs change, talk your caregivers about what is different and how they help you.
