Amazon's next-day delivery service deemed dangerous

Nearly everything is instantly attainable in America. It's even better if it's Amazon Prime. Free next-day delivery? Sounds perfect. However, there's a hidden cost to these Amazon orders that may shock you.

According to a ProPublica report, co-published by the New York Times, Amazon delivery drivers have been responsible for more than 60 accidents that resulted in serious injuries since June of 2015. Ten of these accidents involved fatalities.

Amazon avoids liability

Amazon is famous for its secrecy about earnings, policies and dealings. The company has separated from UPS and now uses mostly third-party corporations and independent contractors to complete its deliveries. This means drivers use either their personal vehicles or vehicles owned by the third-party corporations that contract them to perform their duties. Amazon doesn’t hold the insurance in this scenario. The person or corporation who owns the vehicle does, which allows Amazon to escape liability.

Yet Amazon is still maintaining heavy control over these contractors and subcontractors through an app, and some drivers report the company expects unreasonably high delivery rates. This puts contractors in a constant time crunch, which may influence their decisions on the roads. These decisions may lead to speeding and other risky choices that result in accidents. Consequences can be serious for all involved.

What to do if you’re involved in an accident with an Amazon delivery driver

Be sure to get not only the driver’s details and insurance information but also that of the company he works for, if he is a subcontractor. Depending on the severity of your injuries and your accrued medical costs, consider speaking to an attorney to discuss your options.
