Allstate names Los Angeles one of the riskiest cities for collisions

Earlier this year, Allstate released a list of 200 United States cities ranked from safest to least safe for drivers based on the number of property damage claims filed in each city. This year's list uses data collected between January 2016 through December 2017.

Los Angeles appeared as one of the lowest ranked cities on the list, coming in as number 195. Allstate named the 405 Freeway the riskiest road in LA. Other cities in the list include Brownsville, Texas, which Allstate ranked the safest city, and Baltimore, Maryland, which Allstate ranked most dangerous.

At first glance, it may appear that drivers may just be less careful in low-ranked cities, but this may not necessarily be the case. Analysis of Allstate's list indicates that some cities may have more collisions because they are more densely populated than other cities on the list.

Some habits can improve your safety in a collision-prone city

Living or working in Los Angeles usually means you are stuck dealing with traffic. However, with knowledge that crashes are more common in Los Angeles, it may be prudent to take extra care when driving in and around the city.

Some steps you may take to improve your safety on the road include:

  • Trying to avoid rush hour traffic, when there are the most people on the road
  • Avoiding distractions that may divide your attention
  • Being cautious when approaching crosswalks where pedestrians have the right-of-way
  • Maintaining a safe distance from bicyclists in case they act unpredictably
  • Looking for people trying to enter or exit any vehicle parallel parked on the road
  • Allowing yourself plenty of time to reach your destination

Although there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of experiencing a crash, there is no guarantee that other drivers will take the same precautions. If you receive severe injuries in a traffic collision, legal action may be an appropriate step to help you get back on your feet.
