Pedestrian death serves as safety reminder

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle March 17 in West Los Angeles, police said.

The accident occurred in the 1100 block of South Robertson Boulevard between Olympic and Pico boulevards at about 8:30 p.m. The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene.

The accident serves as a reminder of the dangers vehicles create for pedestrians.

Negligent drivers can ruin lives

There is simply no contest between a pedestrian and a car in a collision. And while these kinds of collisions are often characterized as "accidents" - using that word masks the carelessness and negligence that often lead to such crashes.

Alcohol was involved in 7,224 (8 percent) of all pedestrian injuries involving a vehicle between 2007 and 2013 in California, according to the state Department of Public Health. In that same time, alcohol was involved in 118,268, or 7 percent, of non-fatal automobile accidents.

The Governors Highway Safety Association pinpoints several trends that contribute to the growing number of pedestrian accidents and fatalities:

  • The number of people walking to work has increased by about 4 percent between 2007 and 2016
  • Most pedestrian accidents occur late at night on local roads away from intersections.
  • Besides alcohol, the organization targeted speeding, distractions and drowsy driving as the main culprit for most pedestrian accidents
  • The increase in the number of SUVs on the streets plays a role too - the number of SUVs, which have a higher profile than passenger cars, involved in pedestrian accidents increased by 50 percent since 2013
